Christian symbol for hope.
Commonly used in the 18th and 19th centuries to represent the deceased's
seafaring profession. Also used, often wrapped in vines, to represent firm
Christian faith. In early Christianity, the anchor was used as a disguised
cross and as a marker to guide the way to secret meeting places. Another meaning is that Christ is the anchor which keeps us from drifting
from the proper path. A broken chain on the anchor may represent the end of
earthly life. An anchor combined with an X, the Greek letter Chi, is a sign of
hope in Christ.
